Red Hot Austin Riley Named NL Player of the Week
After a slow start to the season, Braves third baseman Austin Riley is really starting to come around at the plate.
Last week, he hit two homers in Friday’s game, and then hit two homers in Sunday’s game.
As a result, Riley earned National League player of the week honors.
Austin Riley put the hot in Hot-Lanta last week. A sizzling .462 average with 6 homers and 11 RBI’s.
Said Riley:”To finally tap into some power. Drive the ball. Be able to put some runs on the board for the team is very nice.”
Riley’s power surge is reminiscent of his call up two years ago, when he hit 7 home runs in his first 14 major league at-bats.
Said Riley:”I felt like when I first got called up. You know I was just trying to yank everything, and now I’m able to have power to all parts of the field, and I think that has been the biggest thing.”
Said pitcher Max Fried:”I’ve been with Austin since 2016. Every level he’ll have a litlte success, and then try to figure it out. He’s just a smart player. He’s really smart and a hard working kid. I knew that it was just a matter of time before he got comfortable and confident.”
Braves manager Brian Snitker loves having Riley in the lineup, even when he’s not bashing the ball.
Said Snitker:”You just know what the up-side is with this guy, and he always plays defense. Like I say to these guys credit, they stay consistent with their defensive work, and they always show up on the other side of the ball, which is awesome.”
If only Riley could hit six homers every week.
Said Riley:”I’ve been very hot in this game. I’ve been very cold in this game, so I know it can humble you very, very quick. Never. Never satisfied.”
