Red Wolves Endured Plenty of Playoff Drama to Reach USL League One Championship Game
Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) Survive and advance.
That’s exactly what the Chattanooga Red Wolves have done in the playoffs.
They’ve advanced to the USL League One Championship game after surviving two close calls.
In the playoffs, Jimmy Weekley doesn’t feel like he’s coaching the Red Wolves.
More like the nervous wreck wolves.
Said Weekley:”You’re kind of on pins and needles so to speak. You’re waiting for something bad to happen or good to happen.”
Quarterfinals against Omaha. Rafa Mentzingen scored the winning goal in the 100th minute for a 1-0 victory.
Semifinals against Richmond. Red Wolves played with just 10 men after the red card on David Texeira in the 39th minute.
57th minute. Rafa subs in. Cue the Rafa thriller in the 85th minute.
His goal propelled Chattanooga to a 1-0 victory and sent them to the championship finals.
Said Mentzingen:”It’s a great feeling. It’s my first professional final. It’s an unbelievable feeling. I’m so happy for the guys. Everything we have been through. Like from outside forces it’s different. When you are inside, and you see all the hardships we went through. Everything this season since February. We started in February until now. Just being in the finals in November. It’s an unbelievable feeling.”
Said Weekley:”I feel honored to get here. To be leading these guys right now. Means a lot. I’m really happy for them because I see how hard they work every day.”
Red Wolves haven’t allowed a goal in the playoffs.
If the trend continues, they’ll be champions.
Said Mentzingen:”All credit to the guys. Been defending like animals.”
Said Weekley:”I think for us we just have to go be us. We can’t change who we are or our style of play right now. We just have to be us. Hope we get a good result.”
Chattanooga travels to Statesboro for the championship against South Georgia Tormenta on Sunday night at 7:30. The match will be televised on ESPN2. It marks the Red Wolves first ever appearance in the championship finals.
