Remembering Former Walker County Sole Commissioner Bebe Heiskell

LAFAYETTE, Georgia (WDEF) – Walker County is mourning the loss of a former leader.

Former Sole Commissioner Bebe Heiskell has died at the age of 81.

She lead the county from 2001-2016.

But before that she worked for the previous commissioner.

Among her accomplishments, she brought a building inspection program to the county, storm water management, purchased the Marsh House for historic preservation, built several community centers and protected 20,000 acres of greenspace.

Commissioner Heiskell saw several major events hit her county during her tenure, including the Tri-State Crematory cleanup, the 2009 flooding and the 2011 tornado outbreak.

Funeral arrangements are still pending.
