Rental house scam alert
Anne Adams, told WDEF she found a home she wanted to rent in signal Mountain. The home was listed on real estate website Trulia.com.
According to Adams, the home was listed for $500 less than what it usually was listed for but there was a catch. In reality the home is not for rent and the actual owner reportedly lives next door.
"It was a scam. I honestly felt it was my duty to inform people because Trulia is a reputable site. You trust them and have every reason to," Adams said.
Adams said she knew something was not right when over the phone, the man told her he lived in Indiana and required that she pay him $200 just to get the keys to look at the place.
Adams said another red flag was raised when he could not answer simple questions about the property.
But she said all bets were off when she realized he was communicating with her from another country and not from Indiana. Then she said he hung up the phone on her when she confronted him about his inconsistent story.
Trulia.com has been notified about the incident and so has the Chattanooga Better Business Bureau.
