Researchers Looking At The Foods That Give Us Food Poisoning

Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) – Have you ever played the guessing game of just what you ate that gave you a case of food poisoning?
Now several government agencies are teaming up to improve your odds.
The FDA, CDC and USDA are using a new method to find the foods that cause the most food poisoning.
There are four pathogens that cause most cases.
So here is what they  have learned about each.

E. COLI – More than 80% come from beef and leafy vegetables like lettuce.

SALMONELLA – 77% come from seeded vegetables like tomatoes.

CAMPYLOBACTER – Most cases come from dairy products.

LISTERIA – More than 80% come from fruit.

Kansas State Food Safety Specialist Fadi Aramouni says figuring out the causes will lead to solutions.

"For example, if they find out there’s more and more outbreaks due to seeded vegetables, like they say with salmonella, maybe we have to develop special intervention strategies for those and then we have data to see whether our intervention strategies have worked or not."
