CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- Residents along a busy road in Brainerd are raising alarm bells after a series of crashes that have caused property damage.
They say these have occurred in the curve just beyond Brainerd High School.
This curve is right in front of numerous homes, leading to them being hit in these crashes.
Resident Alexus Nicholson, said that the situation is so nerve wracking that, “I don’t even play in my front yard with my kids. We always are in the backyard because I cannot guarantee that a car is going to come flying through my yard and strike one of my children.”
The most recent incident they say happened late Monday night, resulting in one resident having her mailbox, carport, and multiple plants run over and destroyed.
Nicholson described, “There’s an elderly lady that lives a couple of houses and her house was struck twice in a three day period… Just barely missing her house but hitting her property and causing even more damage that what happened a few days before.”
In addition to being concerned for her two children, one of whom has special needs, she is also concerned for students who walk along Moore Road.
“It’s a huge fear of mine that one of these times, one of these cars is going to come flying around this curve and strike one of these Brainerd High School students as they are walking to or from school, or tow or from the rec center, because we have drivers who refuse to slow down,” said Nicholson.
District Five councilman Isiah Hester says the city is already looking at some potential solutions to this issue.
“We’re thinking about inserting traffic lights along that way around some of the curvy areas of Moore Road. We’re thinking about putting guardrails up there, to prevent damage to property, damage to structures, damage even to the human beings walking along that pathway,” said Councilman Hester.
The Chattanooga Department of Transportation added in a statement:
“N Moore Road between Brainerd Road and Shallowford Road is on the 2025-2026 paving list. Included with the fresh asphalt, we are looking to reconfigure the lanes which should decrease speeding while increasing road safety. Our engineers are currently reviewing the reconfiguration options; when we’ve narrowed them down, we will reach out for community input.”
In the meantime, these residents just want drivers to slow down.
Nicholson said, “At the end of the day, if people would slow down, it would solve the whole thing.”
