Ridgland High School breaks world record

I hope everyone marked their calendars for the big holiday.  I mean, how could you forget?

"Tomorrow is National Pi Day.  It is 3.1415," said Ridgeland High School principal Glen Brown.

Pi is a mathematical constant, the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, commonly approximated as 3.14 and can go on and on.

Stem Director Mike Afdahl said, "It’s like I tell my kids I know all the digits of pi I just don’t know the order of them."

In honor of National pi day, Ridgeland High School decided to get their students together to make history and go after a world record.

"It popped an idea in my head when I knew there was a world record out there that our school could reach and just bring some fun to the students," said Afdahl.

Math teacher Scott Harden said, "The current record is 589 so we feel like we sold over 700 tickets right now, so we know we got the record. It’s just a matter of counting heads."

And counting the heads is exactly what they did, counting all the way up to 849 demolishing the old record.

"Always a great time to celebrate math and for our kids to get together and to break a Guiness World Record and to do it in the name of math.  Our teachers are always diligent in their instruction and to end a Friday afternoon with a Guiness World Record is a pretty special thing," said Principal Brown.
