Ringgold Coach Robert Akins Stepping Down to Take Administrator’s Job in Tennessee

Ringgold, GA-(WDEF-TV) Long-time Ringgold head football coach Robert Akins is stepping down.
He’s leaving the gridiron to return to school administration.

Akins is taking the head administrator’s job at Fayette Academy in Somerville, Tennessee, which is near where Akins grew up. The 68-year-old Akins has been in coaching over forty years. But now he’s leaving the Tigers after a 16 year run with 97 wins.

Said Akins:”Nothing I was looking for. Nothing. Even at the end of the season last year. We went 7-4 and had a really great year. Got great kids coming back, but I thought I’m going to continue to coach for two or three more years, but this was just kind of a God thing. I think some people were surprised, but they also knew that within two or three years I was going to need to retire. Just because I was going to be in my seventies. There comes a point and time where you need to get out of the way, and let someone else come in and be a head coach.”
