Salvation Army opens overnight shelter in cold weather
Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) – The Salvation Army is opening it’s doors to the homeless this Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing, and the Chattanooga Community Kitchen is already at capacity.
The Salvation Army’s overnight emergency shelter is at its ReCreate Cafe’ on McCallie Avenue.
It will open at 6 p.m.
It will be able to help 50 people.
“Our goal is to partner with other agencies to keep people safe and warm when these low temperatures setting in,” said Major Algerome Newsome, Chattanooga Salvation Army Area Commander. “We need coffee, creamer and travel-size toiletry items for the shelter.”
The Salvation Army is asking for volunteers to help with the shelter.

The Salvation Army could also use donations of coffee, toiletries, and new heaters.
“Also, our supply of new heaters for low-income home owners is drastically low,” states Major Newsome. “Also monetary donations are welcomed for those experiencing high utility bills that come from having to keep temperatures warmer in their homes.”
