Sano Grand Slam Not Enough as Lookouts Fall to Barons 6-4

The Birmingham Barons rallied to beat the Chattanooga Lookouts 6-4, snapping the Lookouts five-game winning streak.

Lookouts Starting pitcher Jose Berrios gave up three earned runs in 4.2 innings, but struck out nine batters to increase his league-high total to 20. Berrios surrendered his first two runs in the top of the second, but the Lookouts offense rallied behind their starter in the third inning.

With the bases loaded against Barons starter Mike Recchia, the Twins’ number 12 prospect Miguel Sano stepped up to the plate.  On a 2-0 count, Sano blasted a grand slam to give Chattanooga the 4-2 advantage.  That homer was Sano’s fifth career grand slam and first since July 19, 2013.

But the Lookouts lead slipped away as they gave up one run in the fifth, one in the sixth, and one in the seventh.  The Barons scored their final run of the day in the ninth on a Christian Marrero triple.

Reliever Nick Burdi (0-2) took the loss for the Lookouts and Miguel Chalas (1-0) got the win for the Barons.

Tomorrow, the two teams take part in a doubleheader at AT&T Field. First pitch for the first of the seven-inning contests is scheduled for 6:15pm.
