CHEROKEE COUNTY, N.C. (WDEF) — The Sheriff’s Office in Murphy, North Carolina report a rash of scam calls on Wednesday.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office say they have gotten several calls about the problem.

The scammers are pretending to be Chief Deputy Justin Jacobs, attempting to get victims to pay for missing jury duty.

The calls seem to be targeting medical providers in the county.

The Sheriff stresses they will never solicit money over the phone, and urges that if anybody receives such a call to hang up.

If any money is sent, there is not much that law enforcement can do to get it back.

If you believe you’ve already fallen victim, please contact Cherokee County Dispatch at (828) 835-3144 to speak with a deputy.
