Scam experts share ways to prevent fraudulent scams
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – The Better Business Bureau teamed up with scam prevention experts to host a free fraud-prevention event in Chattanooga.
“We organized this event along with the BBB in Chattanooga to spread education to consumers and to let them know how they can avoid being scammed,” said Claire Marsalis, Director for TN Attorney General’s Office, Consumer Affairs Division.
Scam experts from Tennessee and Georgia shared valuable information on fraud protection.
Marsalis says it’s important to avoid losing money to scammers.
“We want folks to know this information. Knowing how they can protect themselves, but also, we have mentioned, pass that information on to friends and family. So, they can share that education and protect their hard-earned money,” Marsalis said.
According to the Federal Trade Commission, more than $130 million has been lost from fraud.
Marsalis says learning about different scams can be beneficial and educational.
“The more you know about the tactics that these scammers are using, the more that you know about the scams. And the better situated you will be to protect yourself,” said Marsalis. “Also, the more educated you can be about the tactics that these scammers are using, the safer that you and your money will be.”
