School volunteer arrested for theft of drugs in Dalton

Dalton, GA (WDEF) – A Morris Innovative High School volunteer faces charges for theft of drugs from a medicine locker.

An assistant principal reported pills missing from the locker to Dalton Police on Thursday. 

The investigation lead to 38-year-old Jahala Hawkins from Dalton.

Hawkins is not an employee of the Dalton Public Schools system, but a paid volunteer through AmeriCorps VISTA program.

Officials found Hawkins had taken at least 20 pills of Adderall and Ritalin from two students’ pill bottles over an undetermined amount of time. 

Hawkins was arrested Friday and charged with two counts of theft by taking and two counts of possession of a schedule 2 drug.
