Secret recording, unpaid loan stir race for Georgia governor
ATLANTA (AP) – Accusations of ethical lapses and incompetence are raising the temperature of Georgia’s heated race for the Republican nomination for governor.
Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle faces Secretary of State Brian Kemp in a July 24 runoff. And things are getting nasty with more than a month left before Republican voters make their choice.
Kemp is questioning Cagle’s ethics after a secret recording showed Cagle saying he backed a “bad public policy” for personal political advantage. Meanwhile, The New York Times reported Cagle in 2008 purchased an Atlanta condominium from a lobbyist for less than its appraised value.
Cagle meanwhile is attacking Kemp for his office’s mishandling of sensitive voter information in 2015 and for his role in a struggling agriculture company that owes farmers $1.6 million.
Both campaigns deny any wrongdoing.
