Sen. Bob Corker Speaks to Women’s Leadership Institute

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF-TV) – We’re winding up a full week of activities celebrating the anniversary of a woman’s right to vote.
That was almost a hundred years ago, and for many young people, it’s hard to believe there was a time when women were not part of the process.
But, today the spotlight was on national and international politics as seen through the eyes of one of the most powerful people in congress.
In the spirit of Margaret Thatcher, Golda Mier and other female world leaders over the years, the members of the Chattanooga Women’s Leadership Institute wanted to hear about…and talk about world events.
And Tennessee Senator Bob Corker, a former Chattanooga mayor has many of the answers.

MICAL TRAYNOR "Well, it was something that we set a goal for earlier this year. To try to work with him and work with his office because we wanted to bring something of a higher level to these sustaining women."

First up—a discussion of the Iran Nuclear agreement hammered out by the Obama administration.
Corker, as head of the senate foreign relations committee, is skeptical.

SEN.CORKER "At some point in time, though. The instability they’re creating in the region and the possibility that they do develop a nuclear weapon will give us some stark choices as a nation. What bothers me about the agreement we’ve reached is it paves the way for them to get as nuclear weapon. And gives them tremendous amounts of resources to continue to wreak havoc in the region."

Among man topics raised at the noon luncheon, the cyber threat.

SEN.CORKER "It’s a huge threat..I mean, many of our military leaders think cyber is actually a greater threat. If you can imagine a terrorist organization or one of our enemies getting inside our power system and shutting it down or shutting down a water system."

Corker says there’s a bill in congress dealing with that threat.
And finally–politics, and especially Donald Trump.
The senator says he’s staying out of that.

SEN.BOB CORKER,(R) TENNESSEE "The last thing I need to do is start getting involved in picking and choosing on the presidential side."

Corker has been mentioned at times as a possible vice presidential candidate.
