Sen. Ossoff’s mail complaints now involve lost tax returns
WASHINGTON D.C. (WDEF) – Senator Jon Ossoff’s feud with the post office now extends to tax returns.
The Georgia Senator announced on Wednesday he is launching an inquiry with the IRS.
The Senator says he has gotten reports of Georgians complaining about getting late charges over tax forms they already mailed to the IRS.
He wants the tax agency to waive penalties and interest fees to citizens affected by slow mail in Georgia.
Senator Ossoff has challenged the Postmaster General over delays caused by problems with the Palmetto Regional Processing and Distribution Center earlier this year.
Previously, he has complained of delayed mail and reports that various courts have gotten mail returned to them about notifications to citizens.
Now, his target is on delinquent tax returns.
“Constituents have notified my office they are being charged penalties and interest fees on late or missing filings and payments that they mailed to the IRS via USPS,” Sen. Ossoff wrote to IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel. “These tax filings are not arriving by statutory deadlines due to ongoing USPS performance issues and some filings even remain unaccounted for. Additionally, many of my constituents continue to experience financial hardship as a result of tax refund processing delays arising from ongoing problems with USPS management in Georgia.”
