Senator Alexander to Simplify College Application Process

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF) –Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander pledges to make it easier for students to apply for financial aid.

He visited Chattanooga State Community College Monday morning with information on new legislation.

It’s called Fast Act.

It would simplify the application that students have to fill out in order to receive federal grants or loans.

Senator Alexander says 18,000 high school seniors took advantage of the free college tuition program called Tennessee Promise, but he says even more students would have signed up if the application wasn’t so complicated.

"What I’m intending to do is to eliminate as many of the questions as possible on this 108 question questionnaire, as close to two questions as possible, and make it easier for Tennessee students to take advantage of Tennessee Promise, says Senator Alexander.

Senator Alexander also praised Hamilton County residents Monday.

He said more than 350 volunteers stepped up and became mentors to those applying for Tennessee Promise.
