MOUNTAIN BROOK, Alabama (WDEF) – U.S. Senator Katie Britt from Alabama is introducing a shark warning bill in honor of Lulu Gribbin.

Gribbin is the 15 year old girl who lost a hand and leg to a shark attack in June on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

The attack came 90 minutes after another woman was bitten just a few miles away.

The beaches were closed after the first attack, but there were concerns that beach-goers were not informed about the earlier attack, quickly.

The Senator’s bill, called Lulu’s Law, would encourage authorities to issue mobile phone alerts, just like an Amber Alert, to warn the public after shark attacks.

The Wireless Emergency Alerts system now is used to warn about dangerous weather, missing children and other critical situations.

Lulu’s family is endorsing the Senator’s bill:

We are eternally grateful that Lulu survived the shark attack on June 7. Lulu is a fighter. We will get through this, and she will adapt to her new lifestyle. However, we remain in disbelief this accident occurred. This was the second attack that day in close proximity, and it could have been prevented with a better alert system. That’s why Lulu’s Law is so important. We’re grateful to Senator Britt for introducing this legislation, and we encourage Congress to pass it for families like ours who just want to keep our children safe,” said Ann Blair and Joe Gribbin, Lulu’s parents.
