Sheriff provides update on criminal homicide in Sequatchie County

SEQUATCHIE CO., Tenn. (WDEF) — The Sequatchie County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on Smith Mountain where a husband was charged with killing his wife.

Sheriff Bill Phillips provided more about this ongoing investigation and what details are available at this time.

Around 4:30 p.m. on October 3, deputies were dispatched to 47 Windridge Drive, on the top of Smith Mountain in Sequatchie County.

Deputies located the residents of the home where they found a woman dead from a gunshot wound.

Keith Kopecky had called the sheriff’s office to inform authorities that he had shot his wife, Marcella “Marcy” Ervin.

“Upon arrival, they found the caller actually sitting outside the house. Took him into custody and then went in and searched the home and did find the wife deceased in the home,” Sequatchie County Sheriff Bill Phillips said.

Investigators are still on the scene collecting evidence and interviews concerning the couple from Illinois.

“We’re not there yet. There may or may not be something there, we just don’t know at this time,” Phillips said.

The suspect, Keith Kopecky has been arrested and charged with criminal homicide for his wife, Marcella Ervin. Although the two were married, she did not take his last name.

“We don’t have a history of domestic instances between these two or anything like that. We know that. But we’re still searching to see what might be there that we didn’t have,” Phillips said.

The victim and suspect are the only two who resided in the home.

“There’s no reason that there’s anything outside this household that’s related to this. No one around would be in any danger at this point. Everything related to this incident has been confined to that household. So, there’s no reason to think that anyone is in any danger,” Phillips added.

The victim has been taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Nashville where an autopsy will be performed to find the exact circumstances of her injuries.

No further details were shared at this time.
