Sheriff says officer injured in Silverdale escape attempt

Officer was dragged as inmate tried to drive off in a van

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – According to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office at approximately 2:30 this afternoon a transport van arrived in this sally port with inmates from the court. Once the van was in the port, an inmate attempted to hijack the van-  injuring an officer.

The sheriff’s office says that when the officer stepped out of the vehicle, the inmate jumped inside and tried to hijack the van.

As a result of the gate being closed in the front and back,  the escape was not successful. Officers did intervene and were able to subdue the inmate.

“The inmate was able to get the van 30 to 40 feet before running into a fence, put it in reverse, backed it up, that’s when the officer was dragged and hit another fence. immediately the other officers jumped in to assist and take the Inmate into custody,” says Sheriff Jim Hammond.

The sheriff’s office says the injured officer was transported to Erlanger.

“The officer was knocked down and drugged and did sustain injuries we do not believe were life-threatening but we’re still waiting for the report from Erlanger. . I can assure you that there will be additional charges against the inmate,” says Sheriff Hammond.

Officials said there were no other inmates involved.

The Inmate is now facing possible new charges of attempted escape, injury to an officer, and perhaps even attempted murder.

The names of the Officer and inmate are not being released at this time. We will keep you updated as this story develops.
