Signal Mountain Road Subway restaurant destroyed by mudslide

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — A mudslide destroyed a Subway restaurant on Signal Mountain Road.

According to officials with the Chattanooga Fire Department, the building collapsed Saturday morning. No one was inside.

Bruce Garner, with the Chattanooga Fire Department, says on Friday at the business a tree collapsed on an employee’s car. After incident, the manager decided to close.

Shuford’s Smokehouse sits right next door. Building inspectors looked at the hillside behind Shuford’s and said there was potential for a landslide there as well. Out of precaution, the restaurant was ordered to close to customers.

Chattanooga Police helped firefighters close off the lane of Signal Mountain Road closest to the landslide. Firefighters cut off part of a downed tree that was hanging over the road.

According to a battalion chief, barricades will remain there until the endangered area has been deemed safe.
