Sigrun Olafsdottir Sparks Mocs Defense
Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) The UTC women lead the SoCon in defense this season, allowing just 54 points a game.
Sigrun Olafsdottir fuels the Mocs defensive attack.
The Iceland native thrives on leaving opponents ice cold.
Reporter:”Do you think you could spell Olafsdottir?”
Said head coach Shawn Poppie:”I could not. Absolutely not. It took me about 8 months before I even could say her last name.” (chuckles)
Said Olafsdottir:”People usually just call me by my nickname so.”
Reporter:”What is your nickname?”
Said Olafsdottir:”Si Si. or Si.”
Si Si like see see how good she is on dee defense.
Said Poppie:”We put Sigrun on the other team’s best player one through four every night, and we actually put a graphic out today. Teams are shooting or opponents are shooting 24-percent when she guards them as the primary defender.”
Said Olafsdottir:”Oh yes I love that challenge. It’s my favorite. I love defense. I feel like defense makes offense better. My thing is I feel like defense is 70-percent mindset. So if you have that mindset that they are not going to score, I feel like you can make it happen.”
Coach Poppie believes Olafsdottir should be the SoCon defensive player of the year.
High praise for someone who really doesn’t have the demeanor of a defensive dynamo.
Said Olafsdottir:”I am known as the quiet person on the team for sure, but I try to talk as much as I can, but my voice isn’t the loudest, so it can be hard at times.”
Said Poppie:”People ask all the time. She’s very unassuming. Right. May not look like the biggest, the fastest, or strongest. I think it’s mental in the sense of taking it personal to try to stop somebody. But I think the other mental piece that she’s talking about is doing your homework. Right. Understanding tendencies. I’m just trying to make sure everyone understands how important she is, and how good of a defensive player she really is.”
