SoCon Releases Conference Slate For Mocs Mens and Womens Basketball Teams
(gomocs.com) SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Southern Conference and the Chattanooga Mocs basketball team have revealed the upcoming 2022-23 conference slate which kicks off with a three-game road stint, the league office announced Monday morning.
The defending 2022 Southern Conference Tournament champions will begin its quest to a regular season title in Charleston, South Carolina at The Citadel on December 29 before traveling to Macon, Georgia to face Mercer on New Year’s Eve.
The road trip wraps up in Greensboro, North Carolina against UNCG on January 4 before the Mocs make their home conference debut against first-year head coach Dan Earl’s former squad VMI on January 7. The matchup is the first of four home games in five total.
Western Carolina comes to the Roundhouse on January 11 before UTC hits the road to Birmingham, Alabama to face Samford on January 14. It’s three-straight home games from that point in which Furman (1/18), ETSU (1/21) and Wofford (1/25) all make the trek into the tough-to-play McKenzie Arena.
The second-half of league play begins against rival ETSU in Johnson City on January 28, just a week removed from the initial meeting of the 2022 season. It’ll be at Furman (2/1) and at Western Carolina (2/4) to round out the team’s second three-game road stretch of the conference slate.
The Citadel (2/8) and Mercer (2/11) visit the Scenic City before the Mocs head to Lexington, Virginia to face VMI in Cameron Hall on February 15. Chattanooga will finish with two of its final three league games at home, hosting UNCG on February 18 and Samford on February 22, before concluding the regular season at Wofford on February 25.

Head coach Shawn Poppie will lead the Mocs in the hunt for a 23rd regular season title as the Southern Conference enters its 40th season of championships in women’s basketball.
The SoCon season begins arrival of the new calendar year. The Mocs will start on the road at East Tennessee State, playing the opener on January 5 in Brooks Gym on the ETSU campus. The Bucs will be under the direction of their third head coach in three seasons.
The next week sees Chattanooga home against Samford who shared the 2020 title with Chattanooga and UNCG before winning it outright in 2021. The Bulldogs will come to the Scenic City on January 12 and Mercer, the reigning league champion, will follow on January 14.
The following week, the Mocs will head to the Palmetto State for matchups against Wofford on January 19 at the Richardson Indoor Stadium. On January 21, UTC will take on Furman at Timmons Arena.
A three-game home stand will follow with UTC hosting UNC Greensboro on January 26 followed by Western Carolina on January 28 to close out the first half of play. A matchup against ETSU the following week tips off play the final seven games of SoCon play. That game will take place February 4 at the Roundhouse.
A trip down I-75 on February 9 will take the Mocs to Mercer for the second meeting this season, then over to Alabama for a matchup against Samford in Birmingham on February 11.
The Mocs close out the home portion of the slate against Furman on February 16 and a double-header with the men’s team two days later against Wofford. The final week will also see the end of play at The McKenzie Arena for several seniors on the squad.
Chattanooga will close out the season on the road with a trip over the mountains to Western Carolina on February 23 then further east into North Carolina to take on UNC Greensboro in the regular season finale.
The Southern Conference Tournament is set to tip off Thursday, March 2 at Harrah’s Cherokee Center in Asheville, N.C., and will run through Sunday, March 5.
