South Broad Stadium on track for April 2026 first pitch

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- We received an update on the construction progress of the South Broad Stadium.

It will soon be the home of the Chattanooga Lookouts.

Construction at the South Broad Stadium is in full swing as workers are actively building the next stadium here in Chattanooga.

Excitement is building for what this stadium, due to be ready in a year from now, will mean for the city.

The incorporation of the Wheland Foundry into the South Broad Stadium project was on full display.

Chattanooga Lookouts President Rich Morzingo said, “When you see these old buildings, I love to look up there and see what they’ve done and see how they’re going to bring all of Chattanooga together to do those sort of things. But I’m blown away by the scope and size of this facility.”

He says that the vision for this site will elevate baseball in the Scenic City.

“When you look at it, it just looks so much larger than our current facility, because it is. There’s a huge concourse that goes behind it, there’s a 360 degree concourse you can walk every night. So, the amenities that are going to be here, and to see how many ways people are going to be able to enjoy Lookouts baseball is exciting,” said Morzingo.

Over 100,000 yards of dirt have been moved on the site.

Over 10,000 yards of concrete and a thousand tons of structural steel are currently on site.

Some of the primary sights we saw included the dugouts coming up over the ground, the grating of the third base line stand, and the former paint shop where offices, event spaces, and a food hall will eventually be, are all on their way towards coming together.

Morizingo says that naming rights of the stadium and suites are in negotiation.

He also says the adjacent portions of this project will soon hit the ground running.

“There’s a phase one of the project that is not the baseball stadium. It’s going to be on the left field side. There will be 300 units of multi family housing, office space in centerfield with retail underneath,” he said.

He adds that what he is seeing so far will in his view combat criticisms over the $115 million dollar cost and impact on the Chattanooga Southside.

Morzingo said, “This is about development, and it’s not about development of a baseball stadium. It’s about the development of 400 plus acres around the ballpark. Parts of Chattanooga that have not seen the love that other parts of Chattanooga have seen over the last 25 to 30 years. It’s really going to reinvigorate this entire side of town.”

First pitch for the Lookouts is still scheduled for April 20-26.
