South Pitt Earns Hard Fought 14-7 Victory Over McKenzie For State Championship
Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) South Pittsburg earned a hard fought 14-7 victory over McKenzie Friday afternoon at Finley Stadium to claim the Class A state title. It was the 7th overall state crown for the Pirates program. South Pittsburg quarterback Kamden Wellington suffered an ankle injury last week in the semifinals. He started against McKenzie, and he clearly wasn’t 100 percent. Neither team converted a third down in the first half as the game was scoreless at the break. South Pitt then lost three fumbles in the third quarter. The Rebels cashed in on one of the turnovers on an 18 yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0. Wellington re-injured his ankle to start the fourth quarter and was replaced by Jamarion Farrior. Pirates kept it on the ground with Farrior at quarterback and they grinded their way through the Rebels defense. Farrior scored on a 3 yard run and a nine yard run to supply the 14-7 victory
. Farrior rushed for 160-yards and was named the game’s MVP. South Pitt’s defense allowed McKenzie only 90-yards of total offense. After the win, Wellington called this greatest team in South Pittsburg history.
