South Pittsburg Eager to Return to State Title Chase
Even though South Pittsburg posted a solid 9-3 record last year, the season was kind of frowned upon.
Welcome to the Pirates high standards.
South Pitt gets the 30-in-30 spotlight.
Most years South Pittsburg is still playing football at Thanksgiving. But last year, they suffered a disappointing loss in the second round of the state playoffs. 14-7 to Gordonsville.
Said head coach Wes Stone:”Absolutely that’s motivating for us because around here, if we’re not playing in that last game, it’s a disappointing season.”
Said running back Jamarion Farrior:”That really motivated us. For me, I watch that every night. I’m here. I’m here. We’re ready to win state. Gordonsville is something that definitely put a chip on our shoulders for this year. I think we’re ready make a run in the playoffs for sure.”
It seems the Pirates weren’t quite up to their usual standard last year in one demanding part of the game.
Said Stone:”Well we’ve got to be able to run the football better. We’ve spent a lot of time on the off-season in the weight room trying to be more physical. These guys have really worked on their bodies. Getting stronger in the weight room has been priority number one.”
Said Farrior:”Our O-line kind of struggled last year, so we definitely made that something we wanted to focus on this year. So yeah, strength is something we definitely focused on. Speed. We know we got it.”
Pirates have also got a quarterback in Kamden Wellington.
Said Farrior:”His ball is so beautiful. He perfects that. That’s the baseball in him.”
Said
Stone:”Kamden has got a very talented arm. He’s a terrific leader on the field. What a lot of people forget about Kamden. This is only his second year to be a starting quarterback at any level. He was a hidden gem so to speak. His ability to lead on the football field, on the baseball field, and on the basketball court.”
