South Pittsburg Rallies to Beat McKenzie For Class A State Title

Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) South Pittsburg rallied from a 14-0 deficit to beat McKenzie 24-21 for the Class A state title on Friday at Finley Stadium. Xavier Webber scored on a 48-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0 Rebels. Right before the end of the first quarter, McKenzie recovered a fumble and later punched in another touchdown to make it 14-0. Pirates finally got on the board in the second quarter on a 19-yard touchdown run from De’Andre Kelly. It was 14-7 at halftime. Dez McNeal got a scoop and score for the Pirates in the third quarter. His 16-yard touchdown tied the game at 14. Pirates then took the lead in the fourth on a 29-yard run from Kelly. He was named the game’s MVP after rushing for 177 yards. After South Pitt went up 24-14, the Rebels scored a touchdown with just over a minute to play, but South Pitt recovered the on-side kick and ran out the clock for the 24-21 victory. It was the Pirates sixth state championship.
