Special needs soccer program hits field in Chattanooga

On a Friday afternoon, boys and girls with special needs hit the field  at Christ United Methodist Church as part of the American Youth Soccer Organization’s Very Important Player program.

"We are a soccer program for kids with special needs.  We try to make it as much like a main stream program as you see every day that normal kids play," said AYSO Administrator Roddey Coe.

This is the first program of its kind in the Chattanooga area and everything is focused on making sure the players have a fun.

"While they may not play in the World Cup, hopefully they are out here and having fun, and it is safe for them."

Today was the team’s second practice and with all the rain we have gotten as of late, it’s safe to say the field has been a little soggy.

"First practice, there were mud holes on each end, and the kids loved it, and that was all they did.  We had muddy balls and muddy kids."

The AYSO is always looking for volunteers, and there is only one requirement.

"We have a teacher.  We have a salesman.  We but we all want to see these kids succeed, and that is the only requirement."
