Springtime Allergy Season Approaching in Chattanooga: How to Prepare

CHATTANOOGA,TN(WDEF)- Spring is arriving in Chattanooga, and with it comes allergy season. As tree pollen starts to be released in large quantities, residents can expect an increase in symptoms like sneezing, itchy eyes, and nasal congestion. Dr. Jessica Van Mason, an allergist at Chattanooga Allergy Clinic, warns that tree pollen is being released earlier and in larger amounts this year, causing an uptick in allergy symptoms.

“Pine pollen is noticeable, but it’s not the most allergenic,” Dr. Van Mason explains. “It’s just a sign that all trees are pollinating.”

For parents of children with allergies or asthma, early intervention is key. Dr. Jeff Bennett with Erlanger Health suggests using a cool mist humidifier to prevent dryness in kids’ noses and ease congestion. He also recommends keeping windows closed, using air purifiers indoors, and having children wash off after being outside to reduce pollen exposure.

As allergy season ramps up, it’s crucial to take proactive steps to minimize symptoms and enjoy spring with fewer disruptions.
