Summerville safest city in Georgia according to new study

ATLANTA, Georgia (WDEF) – Georgia is a violent state, according to FBI crime stats.

The Peach State has higher than average rates of violent crimes in the latest report.

But SafeWise has crunched the numbers to find the safest cities in the state.

And Northwest Georgia is well represented.

Summerville, the county seat of Chattooga County, is the safest city in the state in their list.

1. Summerville
Population: 4,442
Violent crimes per 1,000: 0.23
Property crimes per 1,000: 9.23
Total crime: 2.44% violent, 97.56% property

SafeWise applauds Summerville police for only one violent crime and 41 property crimes in 2016.

They came up with their rankings based on the reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery). Then they calculate the rate of those crimes per 1,000 people to compare cities of different sizes.

Here are the other northwest Georgia towns on the list.

17. Chatsworth
44. LaFayette
48. Calhoun

Atlanta didn’t make the top 50 list (climbing murder rate), but the city has dropped violent crime by 27% since 2009.
