Superintendent Smith on Lawsuit
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF-TV) – As expected, Hamilton County along with Bradley County Schools and five other nearby districts filed suit against the state of Tennessee.
The districts are demanding a more equitable funding formula.
In the lawsuit the districts maintain the state "has not provided a free education to students,
compelling more affluent communities to shift these costs to students and their parents."
Hamilton county schools superintendent Rick Smith issued a news release this morning calling yesterday’s meeting with Governor Bill Haslam and three other large districts "positive."
News 12’s Bill Mitchell found the Superintendent for an exclusive interview at the Hamilton County Education Association meeting.

SUPT. RICK SMITH, HCDE "We’re actually getting a little bit more money than we did last year, just slightly more. Which in talking to him, he realizes now with his proposal …with a hundred million additional dollars, Hamilton county is going to get very few dollars."
The superintendent says if the state does correct the funding issues the lawsuit will likely be dropped.
