Supermarket Guru For the Week of 10/13

I’m Phil Lempert with YOUR New Product Hits & Misses.

Up first,
Bauli Croissant Ready to Eat Chocolate Flavor is a MISS.
This imported from Italy treat has a surprisingly tasty chocolate filling, which is about a quarter of the volume. What is disappointing is what they consider to be a croissant. The texture and taste are more like a hamburger roll that’s shaped like a crescent. Not flakey and not as buttery rich as a croissant. One croissant is 210 calories, 10 grams of fat and 12 grams of sugars.  Retails for $1.29 for 1.76 oz  Total Score is 74.

Kellogg’s Rice Krispies Treats Blasted S’mores Flavor.
Why is everybody making foods with the s’mores flavor? These are basically Rice Krispies Treats with bits of chocolate and marshmallow on top. The texture is just like a Rice Kripsies Treat and while there is a hint of s’mores flavor, it’s just a hint. One bar is 90 calories, 8 grams of sugars and 2 1/2 grams of fat.  Retails for $1.98 for 4.68 (6 x 0.78 bars)  Total Score is 80.

Demitri’s Bacon Rim Shot is a HIT.
This is a clever idea for those who love their bloody Mary’s, or even just spicy tomato juice without the vodka, you’ve got to try this. A blend of salt and other spices with natural flavor to add to the glass rim, and actually produces a nice bacon flavor, but there is no bacon in the ingredients. Each tin contains two 2 ounce packages, which is great for freshness. Half a gram is just 6 calories, less than 1 gram of sugars, but does have 198 mg of sodium.  Retails for $7.95 for 4 oz.  Total score is 88.

Leaf & Love Organic Lemonade Zero Sugar is a HIT.
This is a great idea, but I wonder if the flavor is going to be a turn on or a turn off for most kids. The stevia actually overpowers the lemon juice and has a tiny aftertaste. I love the fact it only has 5 calories, but the question is, will kids drink it?  Retails for $0.90 for 6.75 fl oz.  Total Score is 89.

Vintage Bee Creamed Honey with Pumpkin Spice is the HIT OF THE WEEK.
This is guaranteed to make your holidays very special. Pure raw honey with actual pumpkin, mixed with cinnamon, cloves, ginger and nutmeg is fabulous. The honey is exceptional and this flavor makes me want to use it in beverages, on bread, on everything. One tablespoon is 60 calories and 16 grams of sugar, so maybe I won’t use it on everything.  Retails for $7.95 for 8 oz.  Total Score is 96.
