Supermarket Guru For the Week of 6/2
Up first, Juiceology Fiber Boost Superblend Plum + Grape Blackberry and it’s a Hit.
This juice is all about the fiber. One bottle delivers almost one third of the daily recommendation. Just 190 calories and made with plum, apple, grape, blackberry and pear juice and mixed with coconut water. One bottle however, does contain 40 grams of sugars which are naturally occurring, and they also list stevia as an ingredient. The taste is very refreshing and lighter than you would expect but remember it is just 60% juice. Retails for $2.99 for 6.8 oz. Total Score is 87.
Maya Kaimal Chickpea Chips Sweet Chili is a hit.
I’m making it official, 2014 is the year of the chickpea. More and more products are now using chickpeas as an ingredient which is great news. Chickpeas are rich in protein and fiber and in this case a perfect recipe with lots of spices and flavor. The base itself is made up of chick peas, long and medium grain rice flours. The chips are nice and crisp and a little thicker than than your conventional potato chips but light. One ounce is 140 calories, 7 grams of fat and 2 grams of protein. Taste? Fabulous! Retails for $3.49 for 4.5 oz. Total Score is 89.
Post Great Grains Digestive Blend Berry Medley is a hit.
This is actually delicious, made from whole grain wheat, barley and rolled oats, it delivers 7 grams of fiber per one cup serving. The back of the pack has a terrific explanation of why we need whole grains, fiber and active cultures. This contains both added and natural sugars from juice concentrates. One cup without milk is 210 calories and 9 grams of sugars. This is a great idea but I have to crinkle up my nose when I read they recommend 3 cups a day to support a healthy digestive system. Retails for $3.99 for 12.75 oz. Total Score is 90.
Torie & Howard Organic Hard Candy Pomegranate & Nectarine is a hit.
I’ve practically become addicted to these candies. With a very simple and clean ingredient list and absolutely delicious combinations of flavors. This one is Pomegranate & Nectarine and this is truly candy for adults. It’s a flavor combination that I wouldn’t have thought worked, but it does perfectly. Each one is just 12 calories and less than 1 gram of sugars. Nothing artificial, imported from Mexico. Retails for $3.99 for 2 oz. Total score is 93.
Emile Noel Artisan Oils Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the Hit Of The Week.
My personal favorite olive oils are imported from France. They are just more delicate. This one is from Provence, with a smoothness and wonderful flavor that is one of the best I’ve had. The aroma is fruity and grassy and perfect. Of particular note is the bottle – the glass bottle tinted in olive green protects the oil from being exposed to light and the shape of the bottle makes it very handy to use even when cooking it’s easily gripped even when slippery. Retails for $9.95 for 17 oz. Total score is 96.
