Supermarket Guru Report for April 13th

StarKist Gourmet Selects Thai Style Tuna is a HIT.
This is all about flavor and convenience. Easy to bring to work or for the kids to open. 14 grams of protein you can sprinkle on top of lettuce and in a minute have a great lunch, or if you have five you can make this noodle bowl recipe on the back. No messy can or sharp edges. The tuna itself is light meat tuna, and this batch comes from Ecuador. It’s great that they stamp the country of origin on each package rather than saying "product may be imported from Ecuador, Chili, China, Mexico, etc." The flavor is good, not too spicy but flavorful and comes from the red bell peppers, chili peppers, garlic and onion. I would like to see them eliminate corn syrup as an ingredient and reduce the sodium. One pouch is 140 calories, 3.5 grams of sugars and 430 mg of sodium. Retails for $1.69 for 2.6 oz. Total Score is 86.

Urban Accents Veggie Roaster Manchego & Roasted Garlic is a HIT.
So smart. A simple and delicious way to add lots of flavor to vegetables. This variety is made with real Manchego cheese and combines a terrific blend of spices. Bake with it. Grill with it. And don’t limit yourself to just the recipe on the package – i could see using this on 40 different vegetables, even adding to soup or sprinkling on fish and meats. One quarter teaspoon is 0 calories, 0 fat and 75 mg of sodium. One note: the plastic ziplock bag in the box is perfect to keep what you don’t use, but Urban Accents, help us out. Print the name of the blend on the bag – just printing the item number isn’t enough – I want to have a variety of these in my kitchen, and I want to know the difference. Retails for $4.99 for 1.75 oz. Total Score is 87.

Kim’s Magic Pop Mini Pop Chocolate Drizzled is a HIT.
A terrific alternative to those flavorless rice cakes. These are a recipe of wheat, barley and brown rice with a drizzle of dark chocolate on top which really does add a lot of flavor. By the way this brand has a ton of different flavors from sweet to spicy and everything in between. The cakes also come in different sizes. You can probably have a different flavor every week for a year and not be bored. The crunch is perfect. One cake is just over ten calories. Four cakes are 1.5 grams of fat, 35 mg of sodium and just one gram of sugars. This is certainly a great tasting and healthy way to snack. Retails for $3.99 for 4 oz. Total Score is 89.

Cultured & Saucy Probiotic Condiment Exotic 5 Spice is my PICK OF THE WEEK.
A tasty and clever way to get those probiotics! You can use this sauce on just about anything you want to add a slightly sweet (from the orange, lemon, coconut and cinnamon) and zesty (from the onion, garlic, chili and other spices). Think about adding to fish, meats, soups, sandwiches instead of mayo. A very healthy way to go with a half ounce containing just 5 calories, zero fat, but it does have 115 mg of sodium. They list the probiotic cultures and the quantity right on the label this is great to balance those bacteria in your gut. Gluten free, vegan and oil free. Made in the great state of California. Retails for $7.95 for 8 oz. Total score is 92
