Supermarket Guru Report for August 25th
Better than bacon? That’s what it says on the label, and maybe health wise, but flavor wise? The bacon flavor is good but fights with the coconut flavor. They are not comparable. The texture is good and a cute idea, but right out of the bag? Not so much. I could see using these as a garnish with fish and a delicate sauce. A one ounce portion – about 2/3rds of this bag, is 155 calories, 11 grams of fat, 520 mg of sodium and 11 grams of sugars. Imported from Thailand. Retails for $2.99 for 1.43 oz. Total score is 84.
Circle B Ranch, LLC Marina’s Tomato Sauce Tomato Sauce is a HIT.
This "fresh from the Ozarks" sauce has a very good fresh tomato flavor – no question. Made with vine ripened plum tomatoes, tomato juice and tomato puree. I did find the sauce a bit thin (that’s probably the tomato juice) and you’ll really need to add your own spices if you want more than just a great tomato flavor. One surprise was when I poured into a saucepan to heat, out plopped a beige, almost 3/4" piece of I dunno what. It scared me. Then I looked and it was a whole garlic clove. Nice addition, but it also didn’t have any garlic flavor. One-half cup is just 35 calories, 1.5 grams of fat and 4 grams of sugars. Retails for $5.99 for 24 oz. Total Score is 88.
Lily’s Sweets 70% Dark Chocolate Bar Sea Salt is a HIT.
This is one really good chocolate bar! 70% cacao – no sugar added, they use stevia instead, Fair Trade and Gluten Free. Half this bar, 1.4 ounces is just 170 calories with less than one gram of sugars – but it does have 17 grams of fat. The addition of sea salt is brilliant as it masks that stevia taste that sometimes interferes with the food. Excellent choice – you will be satisfied. Retails for $4.99 for 2.8 oz. Total Score is 92.
Tessemae’s Salad Dressing Green Goddess is a HIT.
You are probably familiar with creamy green goddess dressing – this is nothing like that! This is the real thing! It is delicious! This will make your salads better, not drown them in goop. First ingredient is olive oil which you can taste. A one ounce serving is 180 calories, 22 grams of fat, 170 grams of sodium and zero grams of sugars. The bi-lingual label is a bit pretentious, it’s made in Maryland, but it’s OK – the recipe lives up to the image. Delicious. Well done! Retails for $5.49 for 10 oz. Total score is 94.
Amaize Sweet Corn is MY PICK OF THE WEEK!
I just love corn on the cob and wait for it ever summer. This corn is the best I have had that didn’t come right off the stalk. It is a special variety – non GMO – that is grown along the Snake River in Idaho. Sweet corn is different. It’s more than sweet. The mouthfeel of the kernels is crunchy, almost pops, and the texture sets it apart when grilling. The kernels are huge. We cooked on the grill for 20 minutes (after soaking in water for 15) and cooked perfectly. Run to your supermarket before this season’s crop is over. One cup of corn is approximately 130 calories, 4 grams of dietary fiber, 5 grams of naturally occurring sugars and 5 grams of protein. So good you won’t need to add butter! Look for the variety – Amaize. Retails for $1 for 1 Ear. Total score is 95.
