TBI investigates fatal shooting in Fayette County

STANTON, Tenn. (WDEF)– The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is looking into the death of a man early Sunday morning following an encounter with Fayette County Sheriff’s deputies.

According to initial reports, the incident occurred around 12:50 a.m. at a fueling station on Highway 222 near Exit 42 on Interstate 40.

Deputies responded to a reported stabbing and confronted the suspect.

The situation escalated, and at least one deputy fired at the man, striking him.

Authorities say the man had also suffered what appeared to be self-inflicted stab wounds before and during the confrontation.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A civilian who was stabbed by the suspect received treatment and was later released.

No law enforcement officers were injured.

TBI agents are working to piece together the sequence of events, gathering evidence and conducting interviews.

Their findings will be submitted to the district attorney general for further review.
