TechByte: AI Arms Race continues, but at what cost to our brains?

Hundreds of billions of dollars are flowing into AI – with countries and companies racing to invest.

The newest breakthroughs in artificial intelligence are on display at a summit in India… with tech CEO’s competing to build super-smart AI systems.

But a top scientist is raising concerns – warning an “arms race” risks wiping out humanity.

Dr. Stuart Russell, Computer science researcher, UC Berkeley says “When you’re taking over all cognitive functions, the ability to answer a question, to make a decision, to make a plan, then you are really dehumanizing. Literally, you are turning someone into less than a human being.”

UC Berkeley Professor Stuart Russell says governments around the world need to understand the dangers of AI and make sure companies develop it safely.
Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google are all now government contractors with projects kept deep under layers of red tape. As China researches and continually beats American AI performance, allegedly by copying American AI wholecloth, an arms race is now emerging.
But with all of this talk of AI, it’s important to remember the most important technology: the human brain. Like any muscle, if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it. Relying on AI, especially for students, may have short-term success, but long term… you’ll forget how to learn in the first place.
