Tennessee AG: Proposed ballot push would make job political
Herbert Slatery defends Tennessee unique system for it's top legal position
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Tennessee Attorney General Herbert Slatery says a proposed ballot initiative to require that the attorney general be confirmed by state lawmakers after the current process of selection by the state Supreme Court would make the position a “political office.”
The Republican on Monday praised the system in Tennessee that is unique among states for supporting independence.
Backers of changing it want lawmakers elected by voters involved.
The proposed constitutional amendment needs another two-thirds House vote to get on the 2022 ballot.
Slatery’s current term expires next year before the new process would begin.
It would also reduce the attorney general’s term from eight to six years.
