Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Investigates Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting on East Brainerd Road
Around 12:18 p.m. on Tuesday, December 24th, Chattanooga Police responded to a call about a man with a knife in the 7800 block of East Brainerd Road.
When officers tried to make contact with the man, later identified as Roberto Carlos Rodriguez Zayas, he ran into a nearby wooded area. Officers told Zayas to drop the knife, but the situation escalated, and at least two officers fired their weapons. Zayas was pronounced dead at the scene, but no officers were hurt.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into what led to the shooting, gathering evidence and talking to witnesses. The findings will be sent to the District Attorney General for further review. The TBI’s role is to gather facts, but the decision on whether the officers’ actions were justified will be made by the District Attorney General.
The TBI will not release the names of the officers involved.
