Tennessee has one of the highest reported cases of heartworm disease

RED BANK, Tenn. (WDEF) – Heartworms are running rampant in Tennessee, officials report.
The American Heartworm Society has stated Tennessee has one of the highest reported cases of heartworm disease in pets.
It usually takes several years before dogs or cats show clinical signs of infection.
Dogs or cats of any age or sex may be affected. But a veterinarian can detect these parasites with a simple blood test.
This disease can result in severe lung disease, heart failure, organ failure and even death.
The American Heartworm Society stated that more than a million pets in the U.S. currently have heartworms.
“I cannot think of few better examples in veterinary medicine where an ounce of prevention is worth many pounds of cure than in heartworm prevention. It’s easy to prevent, but it’s difficult and expensive to treat. This disease is transmitted by mosquitoes, so get your dog to your local veterinarian. There is a simple blood test that can be used and there are excellent preventatives that your dog can take,” Dr. Mike Wilkey said.
Of course, medication will aid in keeping these good-for-nothing worms away, but a proper diet will help boost their immune system, energy levels and support vital functions so they are properly defended.
Sometimes the only symptom of heartworm infection is sudden death. So, it’s vital to be proactive to keep our four-legged family members protected.
