Tennessee Valley enjoys MLK snow day
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- A snow day in Tennessee Valley often means time for play.
Folks all over the Chattanooga sought out ways to enjoy the snow of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2024.
One area that was buzzing Monday was Cardboard Hill in Renaissance Park on the Chattanooga Northshore.
Cardboard Hill is a large mound towards the front of the park on River Street.
Adventure seekers were looking to fly through the air on Monday on their sleds, cardboards, and whatever else they could find to test themselves heading down the hill.
One adventure seeker, a young man named Nate, said of Cardboard Hill, “It’s so steep and so fun to go down.”
We asked, “Did you catch any air coming down?”
Nate said, “Yes! You can catch at least four foot air hitting the slopes back here. It’s just awesome! It’s a good place to visit when it snows.”
The type of equipment could either enhance or dampen the experience, as Nate knew from experience.
Nate said, “Yes (he had experience on Cardboard Hill) with cardboard but it’s even better when you have a real sled!”
For others, the thrill of the snow was made special by who was getting to see it for the first time.
The Kirkpatricks were enjoying the snow by taking it in at the TVA Day Use Area next to the Chickamauga Dam.
Others were sledding down a large hill at that spot and having snowball fights.
Aaron Kirkpatrick said, “We’ve been here for a few years. We haven’t seen a lot of snow here in the valley. So we’re excited!”
His wife, Anna Kirkpatrick, said, “It’s actually sticking!”
Aaron Kirkpatrick said, “Yeah we’re excited that it’s sticking and that we can have fun in what we get!”
For the Kirkpatricks, the day was made special by their young son James experiencing his first snowfall.
For them and many other families with young ones, the amazement of experiencing their first snowfall as a family was evident all across Chattanooga.
Aaron Kirkpatrick said, “This is first snow so he’s trying to figure out what to think about it. “
James pointed up to the sky after his father said that, displayingthe wonder that a first snowfall can bring.
