The American Red Cross Offers Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips

Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) – We’re just a few days away from Halloween. But before millions of American children can say those three little magic words, here are a few tips, from the American Red Cross, to make their night of trick-or-treating as safe as possible.

COSTUME SAFETY:
Add reflective tape to costumes and trick-or-treat bags.
Use flame-resistant costumes
Have everyone wear bright costumes to be seen easily.
Use face makeup, instead of masks, to avoid covering the eyes and making it hard to see.

TRICK-OR-TREAT SAFETY:
Make sure your children have a flashlight to see where they’re going.
Don’t cut across yards or alleys.
Visit only homes that have a porch light on. Accept treats at the door-never go inside.
Be cautious around animals you don’t know, especially dogs.
And never ever allow your children to run off alone.

And for a safer more enjoyable Halloween experience, the Chattanooga Fire Department will open all 19 of their fire stations from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., giving kids an up-close look inside a fire station, and of course there will be plenty of free candy.
