The December Rains Are Not Over—And EMA is Ready Just In Case

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF-TV) – If the Chattanooga area gets a few more heavy showers this week, we may set a rainfall record.
It’s especially unusual since it’s falling in December.
The events of this week has kept the emergency management people on the job and ready to respond.

Just when you thought the rain may slack off—here it comes again.
So far about 4 and a half inches of rain has left swollen streams and even TVA opening flood gates and trying to manage all that extra water.
That’s not to mention what’s happening with streets and roadways.

TONY REAVLEY, DIR., HAMILTON COUNTY EMA "What worries me the most is people not paying attention to flash flooding type situations where there’s a road closed sign…folks want to drive around it and it doesn’t look like its deep ..then they get stalled ..not only are their lives endangered ..the rescuers lives become endangered too when they have to go rescue them."

And there are plenty of stories in the last few days of people narrowly averting disaster while driving.

But among all those stories, there was a positive note.

TONY REAVLEY "Every stream we’ve got now is below flood stage, which is encouraging to me…South Chick, I’m sorry was the last to go below flood stage."

More rain came in the afternoon..and more is predicted this week, but—-

TONY REAVLEY "One thing I feel good about today is all roads are open except for Roberts Mill where they had the washout Christmas day ..all roads are open right now."

Reavley says EMA was preparing to open shelters over the weekend, and found out that they weren’t needed.

TONY REAVLEY "And then I’m thankful its kind of warm, because it could have been snow ….it could have been what folks out in Texas and Oklahoma are getting …it could have been snow and Ice." .
