The gas tax holiday in Georgia ends at midnight
ATLANTA, Ga. (WDEF) – Governor Kemp’s suspension of the gas tax in Georgia ends at midnight.
That means prices could spike by around 30 cents on Thursday as prices return to normal.
The governor suspended the tax back in September to give Georgians a break from inflation.
But a legal loophole is keeping him from extending it another month.
The law says he cannot order the lifting of the tax while the legislature is in session.
They are returning this week for a special session to discuss new redistricting maps ordered by a court.
Lawmakers could also vote on continuing the gas tax suspension, but that is not on the agenda at this point.
If they don’t act this week, they could again when they return for their regular session in January.
If the legislature doesn’t act, the governor could then take matters into his own hands again.
