The Salvation Army distributes Angel Tree Gifts in Chattanooga
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — The Salvation Army of Chattanooga is working to make Christmas a little brighter for local families as it reaches the distribution phase of its Angel Tree Program.
After months of preparation, families in need lined up in their cars as volunteers distributed gifts during a drive-through style event. Organizers say the program would not be possible without the overwhelming support from the community.
“One of my kids’ teachers said that when she was little, she was on the Angel Tree,” said Captain Breann Good with the East Lake Salvation Army in Chattanooga. “She remembers receiving a specific item she loved so much, and even to this day, she knows the Salvation Army and community members had a part in making her Christmas joyful.”
Captain Good says many families face difficult choices during the holiday season, often deciding between buying gifts or covering basic necessities.
For organizers, the impact goes beyond toys.
“You know, for the families, it’s a sense of relief knowing that their children or the senior citizens in their life will get the Christmas they deserve,” said Kendall Hudson, Community Relations and Development Manager with the Chattanooga Area Command. “And for us, it’s knowing that we’re able to help bring those people comfort.”
Hudson added that even essential items can make a significant difference.
“Just knowing that for parents, even throwing in a box of diapers and a couple of wipes can be huge,” Hudson said. “Diapers are expensive. You’re helping the whole family, not just a child opening a Barbie, but easing expenses so families can put that money toward food, rent, or electricity.”
The Salvation Army says the Angel Tree Program is not just about gifts, but about ensuring families of all ages, including seniors, do not have to choose between meaningful items and essential needs during the holidays.
