Three Mocs Wrestlers Advance to Second Day of Southern Scuffle Led by Alonzo Allen

(gomocs.com) The UTC wrestling team wrapped up Day 1 of the 2019 Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Clothing in McKenzie Arena today.  The Mocs sit in 16th place overall with 22 points.

Top-ranked and defending NCAA Champion Penn State holds the lead with 121.5 points.  No. 3 Oklahoma State is second with 111.5 points, while Iowa State and Lock Haven are tied for third with 60 points each.

Senior Alonzo Allen, junior Chris Debien and sophomore Fabian Gutierrez are all still alive in tomorrow’s backdraw for the Mocs.

Allen advanced to the quarterfinals at 125 with wins over Audey Ashkar (Binghamton) and Richie Koehler (Rider).  He lost in the night session to Northern Colorado’s 17th-ranked Rico Montoya.   He moves on to face Ohio’s Shakur Laney in tomorrow’s consolation matches.

Debien opened with a pin against Northern Colorado’s Chris Sandoval before losing a one-point match to Lock Haven’s D.J. Fehlman (6-5).  He followed that up with wins over Edinboro’s Carmine Ciotti and Iowa State’s Ryan Leisure to move into Wednesday’s action.

Gutierrez was the fourth seed at 125, but was tripped up by Navy’s Jacob Allen 3-2 in the first round.  He battled back with wins over Presbyterian’s Benny Gomez, Edinboro’s Lucas Rodriguez and Navy’s Logan Treaster.

Tomorrow’s action starts at 10:00 a.m. (E.S.T.), with the semifinals at Noon.  The finals begin at 7:00 p.m., along with the rest of the medal matches.
