Throwback Thursday from the News 12 Archives
2005
What did people have to say about Facebook 10 years ago?
Is it a fad or will it last?
CBS shows us a story they ran in 2005 about this new social network that is all the rage on college campuses that inspired "The Facebook Trance."
1985
Now let’s take you back to a little March Madness from 30 years ago.
UTC was riding high with one of the greatest Mocs ever, Gerald Wilkins.
The team won the Southern Conference that year, but stumbled in the conference tournament.
That meant no trip to the NCAA despite great expectations.
So they got a consolation bid to the NIT and ran with it.
The Mocs beat Clemson in a nail biter in the first round.
Then they pulled off a miracle finish to defeat Lamar in the second round.
Our stories catch up with the team as they return from Texas after that thrilling win.
First, we have Jerry Winstead talking Gerald Wilkins and Coach Murray Arnold. (See 1st video)
Then, anchor Deb Collins talks to the fans who greeted them at Lovell Field. (See 2nd video)
Despite dreams of a championship, the Mocs lost that game to Louisville, 71-66.
But the 3rd round game is the furthest the school has ever made it in the NIT.
1970s
And we include another CBS promotional photo and blurb from the early 1970s.
This week our star is Carroll O’Connor. (Click on Images in top left, then Slideshow)
Here is the CBS promo they sent us to put in the TV section of the paper.
"BEHIND EVERY MAN — Carroll O’Connor, in a dream sequence, points out that a man is noting without his girls, on THE CARROLL O’CONNOR SPECIAL — "Three for the Girls,"" dealing with the three women who most affect the life of a man – his wife, mother and daughter — to be broadcast Monday, Nov. 5 ((:30-11:00 PM, EST) on the CBS Television Network.
We don’t have a clip from that actual special. So we give you instead another show from the same era. Carroll O’Connor doing a skit with Dean Martin for a Dean Martin Special.
