Tips on stopping “the summer slide”

Students can forget much of what they learned during the school year over the summer

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Are your kids suffering from the summer slide?

That’s the term educators use to describe students as they come back to school from their summer break.

No all kids get it, but some do tend to fall back on their reading skills and other academic lessons.

So instead of learning, they veg out in front of the TV or Playstation.

The folks at Sylvan Learning Chattanooga have some tips on how parents can end the slide.

These tips include:

— Have your child read for at least 20 minutes every day
— Spend time cooking together
— Explore different kinds of reading material like picture books, chapter books and magazines
— Make use of your local library
— Listen to audio books on summer car trips
— Read aloud with your children daily
— Review skills with fun, hands-on review activities
— Engage in meaningful conversation and help build your child’s vocabulary
— Enjoy a new hobby!

It’s all about turning the brain on instead of shutting it down for the summer.
