NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WDEF) —  The Tennessee Attorney General’s Office (TAGO) has announced a settlement with Family Dollar Inc.

According to TAGO, this settlement comes after an investigation that revealed Family Dollar stores in Tennessee were selling consumer goods that had knowingly been stored in a rodent-infested distribution center.

This distribution center was located in West Memphis, Arkansas.

“When a mom or dad buys groceries for their kids, they should never have to wonder whether some nasty critter got the first bite.  No matter the family budget, whether at a discount shop or not, every Tennessean deserves confidence in the food they buy. This settlement holds Family Dollar accountable and protects Tennessee families from being sold harmful or mislabeled food.”

-Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti

Family Dollar Inc. announced a voluntary recall in 2022 of FDA-regulated products that were stored in that West Memphis distribution center.

The company pleaded guilty in 2024 to causing FDA-regulated products to become adulterated while being held under insanitary conditions in.

The plea agreement included a $41.675 million fine and forfeiture.

According to TAGO, this is the largest-ever monetary criminal penalty in a food safety case.

Family Dollar agreed to pay the state of Tennessee $1.125 million as a part of the settlement.
