Trapped Cumberland Trail hikers rescued from rising creek waters
HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) — Monday thunderstorms brought heavy rainfall and caused creeks to rise. Because of this, the Mowbray Volunteer Fire Department rescued several hikers who became trapped.
Mowbray VFD said the hikers were at the Pocket Wilderness and were trapped on the opposite side of the creek in the Cumberland Trail.
“The heavy rains turned the creek into a raging river,” they explained.
Upon arrival, firefighters found six adults and two children attempting to cross the creek.
Mowbray VFD, Dallas Bay VFD and Tennessee State Parks rangers responded to assist the hikers in crossing the creek.
Responders set up a rope system and helped the hikers cross the creek in a raft. It took two trips, first transporting four adults and two children, and then returning for the other two adults.
Nobody was injured during this incident, according to firefighters.
